Legend has it that the Koi was the only fish able to swim up the Yellow River falls. According to Japanese legend if a koi succeeded in swimming up the falls to the point called “Dragon Gate” on the Yellow River it would be transformed into a dragon.

This was inspired by my wife Roong. She has taken up photography, and one of the nicest things to take photos of are the lotus flowers. Sadly, they are becoming scarce. People dredge them out of the ponds to make room for one thing or the other. I am afraid that someday they will be only found in artwork. That’s what made me think of the cave painting look.

beautiful work mobii, i too love the legend of the koi, i like that subtle yellow patterning, texture and watercolour like effect too….it’s very very appealing :)

  • Thank you Karin. I was trying to find the actual legend, or a retelling of the myth, but all I could find was that generalization. I want to do more of these, and attach the myth or legend that kind of goes with it. I want to try a few Thai stories. They’re a hoot, especially the ones about Hanuman.

This is very beautiful Don, and I love your idea with the cave look. It is certainly sad that the lotus flowers are becoming scarce, but you have portrayed it beautifully.
