Pavlov's Dog - Pampered Menial
This is kind of a tribute to a band that started in my hometown of St.Louis, Mo. They were called Pavlov’s Dog. I met Doug Rayburn, one of the members of the group, when I was bartending at “The St.Louis Opera House”. I think Doug is producing music now at the Benton Park studio in St.L. Through Doug, I had a chance to meet the lead singer, David Surkamp. I even got to go to a Blasters concert with him once, when he was doing a music critique of that show for the local newspaper.
David’s voice was remarkable. He can hit these notes that are so high and intense that it made your teeth chatter. Some have compared him to Getty Lee of Rush, But I think David’s voice was in a league of its own. They combined driving rock and roll with intricate classical string stuff that sounded like what I would expect to hear in a gypsy camp. It was amazing. I only got to see them perform a few times for reunion shows, but was able to see Doug and David play in their latest endeavors pretty frequently.
The band had an interesting career to say the least. they became quite popular in Europe and Australia. There ended up being 4 albumns that I know of. I recently stumbled onto a few websites of the band and it’s members, but most are old, and not being kept up. It’s a shame. They were truly a unique experience back in the 70’s and 80’s.
I have been feeling a bit homesick lately, so finding the sites, and playing the music brought back some of the best memories of that time in my life. I have tried to contact them, and ask if it was ok to use this artwork, but the email addresses are outdated, Maybe they will see this, and at least write and tell me it sucks! Haaaa! I hope they are all well, and still giving their fans a great show, wherever they are.
- If anybody out there saw PD play, drop me a note and tell me where and when. And if you happen to run into one of the guys, please tell them Don says “Hi”, and that their music totally freaks out Thai people! Haaaa! Thanks.

I have that album, and their ” At The Sound of The Bell” both great. I still listen to them on occasion and it still sounds new. Wonderful music and an excellent voice…
