These ants are actually ‘floating’ on water. They used water’s surface tension to keep from sinking. This allowed them to make a floating bridge to get to dry land after their nest was flooded by a recent heavy rain. The ants to the upper-right of the picture are part of a branch of the bridge that the ants are working to connect to the main span. In total, the bridge stretched for about 20 ft (6 m)! They couldn’t have done it without teamwork.
