  • Keeli

    Keeli

This is super cool! Never seen anything like it!

  • Matt Merritt replied

Thank you Keeli! These spiders are fairly common around here. They are not poisonous, and in fact are beneficial as they often make their webs under citrus trees, thus reducing fruit flies, and other insect pests.
I guess the red colouration, spikes and white tufts of silk serve to keep people and animals from crashing through their web. I know that keeps me from running through their web!

Fantastic shot of such an exotic creature. Spider? It’s got enough eyes, but the legs are totally different to the long, articulated ones I’m used to.

  • Matt Merritt replied

    Thanks Dayonda!
The eyes are not visible actually… what look like eyes are really just spots. Only parts of a few legs are in sight, but you’re right, they are kinda short.
