Am I the first? Gave this 5 mins. hoping someone else might jump in.
Thinking merge/emerge, believing in that foot (forward) best foot about to stand up and the door be pushed open by the hand – and who will step forth? Unrestricted by her addictions/escapism/fantasy. She looks old & poor, part cut-out, like a cartoon not to be taken seriously. The guy at the bar is the side of her that needs to pretend and get away from reality. (But she has hold of the door – she’s making the effort to deal with the real). The mural on the bottom half – is youthful, angry, chaotic. I take it as a denouncement of her condition, the negative judgement of others (just giving a visceral summary of reactions here ( ‘coz you’re prob not going to tell me what it is, anyway)

The guy looks familiar. Should I know him? The feet are neat and the hands are scary. The window fits in nicely. Of all the bars in all the world….. Ole Shallay!

Yes, Denis, it is my “friend” Romare Bearden…
...I will leave the rest to you folks to interpret.

I’m ashamed to sy that I didn’t know the man, but having just visited the ‘Romare Bearden Foundation’ I now know more. I can see your fascination with him and I will explore further. Any friend of the Duke is OK by me. Thanks Margot… I too am now fascinated!
