North to the Future

I took this photo in Alaska just last week (March 2008) at Girdwood Airport, a small dirt strip (snowcovered that day) about 40 miles south of Anchorage. I’d been flying the day before as a passenger on three incredible helicopter flights but did not have my camera aboard. (Don’t ask.) The next day, I had my camera handy and snapped this photo on my way into Alpine Air’s office at the airport. The clouds were caught up in the snow-covered mountains all around the airport, the sky was an amazing blue beyond it, and the bright red and yellow of the airplane really called out to me.

I think this photo will appeal to any pilot who dreams about flying in the bush and exploring far away locations.

Oh so tempting to say, a la “Naked Gun”, nice beaver. But it is, a wonderful capture of a superb workhorse. The colour and setting work so well. You lucky, lucky lady. Deeply envious.

Beautiful image, love the way it is composed – it looks like the plane is ready to soar right down that valley!

Thanks everyone. This was one of those scenes you stumble upon and it absolutely screams to be photographed. I have three versions of it at various focal lengths, but I think this one (the closeup) is the best.

Fabulous shot, must be lovely to view our gorgeous planet from above. I spend too much time in commercial aircraft but there is nothing better than small fixed or rotor wings, lucky you !!!
