Marie Klement is an Adelaide based artist, with extensive experience in portraiture, visionary art, illustration, mural and graphic arts.
Biographical Information:
Ever since I can recall, there has always been a deep fascination for and great love of colour, nature and art. My decision to pursue a life in art, came after experiencing certain inspirational and uplifting feelings, which were evoked simply by gazing upon and contemplating various paintings created by Masters of long ago.
Mostly self taught as an artist, I had worked as a graphic artist and art director in the 1970’s and 1980’s for advertising agencies: George Pattersons, Leo Burnett, McManus Masius and Fortune Advertising.
Leaving advertising in the mid 80’s, I began freelancing fulltime as an artist, illustrating for various children’s books and magazines, including painting a 30ftx6ft (10mx2m) mural for a major opal company, Opal Field Gems. My work was entered in various exhibitions locally and nationally, which included a nationwide touring exhibition. The style of work incorporates realism through to impressionist and abstract.
I have travelled extensively to Europe, Asia, Japan, South America and the Pacific, living and working for a short while, as a farmer with my husband, in Fiji and then North Queensland.
After leaving my husband in late 1992, I started drawing and painting again. My work has since been published nationally and internationally in magazines, such as Wellbeing, as prints and as cards for charities such as Oxfam(Community Aid Abroad). My work also resides in various collections throughout Europe – Austria, Switzerland, Germany and Sweden, U.S.A., Singapore.
After returning to my hometown, Adelaide (South Australia) in 1996, I received some training at the Adelaide Central School of Art from Lisa Young and Anna Platten. I had also taken up the rare intensive Masterclasses with one of Australia’s famous portrait painters – Robert Hannaford.
I have now been working full time as an artist for over 10years, supporting myself with commissions by word of mouth, selling paintings, prints, cards etc. This is what I LOVE to do.
I have completed an artist mentorship program in France and Italy in 2006, with one of America’s leading successful artists – Scott Burdick.
My Commissions include:
10m x 2m mural for Opal Field Gems, Adelaide
•Portraits for various businessmen and women
•Book and magazine illustrations
•2.5m x 2m mural for a mausoleum in North Adelaide
•3m x 2m mural for Our Lady of Yankalilla Shrine – South Australia
•1.8m x 1.4m portrait of Ernie Dingo (entered in Archibald Art Prize)
My current website is being upgraded and still under construction, however, I do still have my old one up and running – www.marieklement.com
My preferred medium is oils, however, I also work with Pastels, acrylic and charcoal.
Prices for commissions vary according to size, the type of medium used and detail of painting. Pastels are usually around $150 to $1500. Oil paintings can start from $1500 upwards.
Marie also seeks to inspire and enrich peoples’ lives by painting subject matter which evoke profound feelings that uplift and unite people with intangible spiritual realities. Bringing hope to an often dark perspective.
