Some time ago I stumbled across a photograph of a young woman on the internet. She looked so beautiful and yet had an air of sadness about her. I don’t know why her picture captivated me so much but I just had to try to paint her portrait.

It took me a while to pluck up the courage to ask a total stranger on the other side of the Atlantic if I could use her pictures for a painting. I’m so glad i did.

Thank you MJ for just being you. You are a true inspiration, my best friend and I love you with all my heart.

Anyway, here is the painting in progress….

Step 1 I create an accurate pencil drawing directly on to a stretched canvas and apply a loose acrylic underpainting.

Step 2 I then aply glazes of semi-transparent oil colour, painting titanium white in to the wet glazes and allow each layer to dry thoroughly.

Step 3 It’s a time consuming process as the oil colours are very slow drying but allows me to refine and blend the still wet paint over days.

Step 4 Adding details and the finishing touches.
