Makeba’s Artist Statement:
My new series, The Service Series, speaks to viewers of acceptance and change, of gathering for the purpose of oneness on a very literal level, and including public service in our way of thinking again. The images that I have selected to exhibit in the “Sapphire and Crystals: BeyONd Race and Gender” exhibition are in the style and format of work that I regularly produce. They speak to viewers on the importance of coming together, of “Gathering,” of going beyond for the purpose of becoming one in our way of thinking. At this juncture, in order to procure the change we would like to see in this country, it is imperative that we embrace this mind-set now, during the term of service of Barack Obama, who exemplifies this way of thinking. We all need to assist the world in going BeyONd where we are, in order to reach where we, as one, need to aspire to be.
