“Faceless,” is dedicated to all the woman and girls who suffer injustices all over the world, and remain faceless to world. Although I created this image in 2007, and had titled it “Girls,” I didn’t fully realize what it meant until just this week. In the news, a husband kills his wife, by placing a plastic bag over her head, hangs her, and flees with the three children after countless please for help to local authorities. A father is convicted of keeping his daughter locked up as a sex slave for 24 years. Daughter now 42. Many females are enslaved, murdered, raped, tortured all over the world, and many more will remain faceless to us. Stop, think, and listen.

Faceless belongs to the following groups:

Art is perhaps the only way to communicate such depth of feeling and meaning….wonderful work.

  • Makeba Kedem-D... replied

Yes Estelle, I agree. I believe artists tend to feel things a bit more intensely than the rest of the world. This is why we are often seen as being a bit unstable, as we sometimes express some of the ugliness that we can’t help but respond to. I shed many tears for the woman and girls I read these aweful stories about. I always wish that I could do more than paint a picture, and donate money to help, that probably often never reaches the ones in need. Thank you so much. peace…

makabe – this is a piece of work that touches me so deeply and i feel a sense of recognition each time i go back to look at it. the textures are wonderful and seem to highlight the complexities and layerings of stories and experiences of those who are so often faceless. thankyou. xjm

  • Makeba Kedem-D... replied

You are most welcome, and thank you for your comment janetmary. With intense emotion, this painting was painted over several times before I knew what I was expressing. The condition of the subject matter was always ugly, however I wanted to express that the subjects themselves remain spiritually beautiful and innocent regardless of their condition. peace…

Think this is a massive issue in society. More obvious outside of Australia but still a major issue here. I think however that it is an issue that both sexes can work togeather on. I beleive the essence of women to be the most powerful of the 2 sexes. However men have tried to control rather than embrace this power. I believe that women must try to go inside for their power rather than to emulate the mistake men have made by trying to control externals. Such a complex issue and one where both sexes are victims of unconsciousness.

    Peace Tony,

Thank you so much for your comment. Between my work as an Art Director at a youth social services agency , my work as a professional studio artist, and my work as a mother, I miss a lot. Sorry my reply took so long. I think you make a good point.

    Peace,

Your work is very powerful and impressive speaking out on critical issues that increase human suffering. I love how you pair your stunning artwork with your narrative to enhance the total artistic package. I also love to pair my photography with narratives, stories and meaningful subjects to bring awareness of topics that affect individuals and the countries they life in that can lead to a global crisis. We see the damage of male dominated societies all around the world, more often in third world countries where women lack recognition and importance and as you so boldly demonstrate in your painting remain “faceless” despite their powerful contributions to society and the world. This is a beautiful painting, the distressed color tones reinforcing this very important issue.

Peace Julie, and thank you so very much for your in depth feedback. It is always a delight to discover comments made by like minded individuals who understand the magnitude of what I am attempting to express through my art. peace…

I’d like to say that I appreciate the social conciousness of your works. For those who have no voice sometimes our’s will have to serve. Perhaps one of these days we’ll weave a fabric that will cover and protect all of the dispossessed, the disenfranchised and the broken and lonely hearts that our society has created. Thanks for joining your voice with the rest.
