Serenity Lost

i stand in front of a mirror
a reflection of what i represent
except, i do not like what i see.

i am a teenage girl
a sister, a daughter
a walking martyr.

i a teenage boy
a brother, a son
as i turn to run…

i am a middle aged woman
a wife, a mother
my face, i smother.

i am a middle aged man
a father, a husband
i think of what could have been…

i am an old woman
a forgotten soul
steal me whole.

i am an old man
sinking in the sand
of time that covers me.

mirrors haunt me
mirrors taunt me
reflects who i am
and all that i am not.

i strike it, it shatters
everything that i thought
that ever mattered.

i think i am finally at peace
without that reflection.
