Suppressed Urge

Suppressed Urge

an image created with photoshop. All the bricks are sourced from a single shot of only about a dozen, taken with a ‘point and shoot’ el cheapo camera. I spent a lot of time rearranging, inverting and re-painting bricks so that they wouldn’t look too repetitive. I feel this is probably my best so far. I made a 19-inch deep photographic print of this earlier in the year, and am still amazed at the clarity of the picture .. i can see more in it than i ever saw on a computer screen.

You can have all the skill in the world but if you don’t have imagination its worthless.. in your case you have both.

  • mistertrooth replied

couldn’t agree more with the skill/imagination comment. That’s why children’s pictures are often so beautiful. ‘Urge’ is the most recent one of this bunch.

Hey mistertooth…this is FABULOUS….(thought I’d through a new adjective at ya!) I love the way this came together and all of your time invested was well worth it!! Excellent thought and wonderful work!

  • mistertrooth replied

Thanx carrie – a lot of the work never got seen… the brick guy was originally holding onto a disgusting pig/woman/monster thing, which was where the oicture started – but i realised she was spoiling it, and that brick boy was supposed to be the central figure, and i went back to the drawing board, and found the moth, and had one of those ‘EUREKE’ moments that make art worth doing.

  • mistertrooth

    mistertrooth

    My god…..
What a precious work you have done..
The wall…emanates love for your own domains…your home ..
and the figureitnis emerging is soft and gentle…having trapped with sweetness this butterfly..with any mean but trying to feel the strength of her wings. You are an artists…and this work has moved in may ways…specially to give me courage to follow my own paths… thankyou.
Rosa (thanks for your presence in my Rose crying gold tears)

  • mistertrooth replied

wow… thankyou so much Rosa – your interpretation gave me goosebumps. When someone shares their impression of a picture in that way, it enables me to see my own own work through the eyes of a stranger, which is always a pleasure…..

Love it! Oh, congrats for the feature :-)

  • Julie Miles

    Julie Miles

Poor moth! Doesn’t he realize it isn’t a brick?

  • mistertrooth replied

Hmmm- interesting question. If ‘he’ is the brick man, i would say he definitely knows the moth isn’t a brick, and that’s why he’s holding onto it. The question for me is; how hard is the moth actually trying to escape? The brick man’s body language to me is quite gentle – even tender….

  • Julie Miles

    Julie Miles

This is true…but I was thinking in terms that a moth’s wings are very delicate, so no matter how gently the brick man is holding on to it, the wings still might get damaged. And, although the brick man’s expression is wistful, it seemed, to me anyway, that the moth was almost an afterthought to him.

Of course, it’s your art, so your interpretation can overrule anything I have to say.

  • mistertrooth replied

no – i think all interpretations are as valid as each other … once you put your stuff out there, you don’t ‘own’ people’s responses to it. I agree he does look a little distracted. what i like about creating these photo montage images is that because i’m using pieces of other pictures, certain elements of the pictures are beyond my control, which makes the final product a bit like a dream i woke up from. I’m still working this one out myself :-)

  • Teeze

    Teeze

Wow – Awesome work. Very nicely done indeed. :) The extra effort on the bricks really paid off – they look great!

  • mistertrooth replied

Thanx teeze – I’m about to feature this in a group exhibition at a new gallery here in Melbourne. I’ve never seen this image printed on paper before … I’m picking up the print from the lab this afternoon – very excited! It will be 19 inches deep (top to bottom) – so fairly large.

Amazing image! Would have taken ages!

  • mistertrooth replied

Yeah, it did. I had created the environment for a different character entirely, but realised the character was letting the rest of the pic down… Then the brick man popped into my head, and i resisted starting on him for ages, coz i knew he was going to be a mission, but i knew he would look amazing, so i took a deep breath and got started. Glad i did. Thanks ;-)

This is just AWESOME. The hands are great! and the tension…. tense. The urge is indeed supressed. It’s interesting… i think you have captured the Power which only exists when Someone shows mercy. I hope that makes sense. :)

  • mistertrooth replied

Thanks Limerick … i really love hearing people’s intertretations of these digital images – because i never start out with any idea at all of what i want to ‘say’ with them, and i find some of them – this one especially – pretty enigmatic myself. I think of them as little glimpses of my own sub-conscious, little puzzles for me to contemplate :-)

  • mistertrooth replied

p.s – the hand on the left is from a picture of a very beautiful man with huge hands and long fingers, holding a magazine …. the fingers on the right are from a pornographic picture of a woman …. i love photoshop surgery!

  • limerick

    limerick

lol… i have a penchant for cutting up 70’s penthouses for arts sake. Giger said ” I worked surrealistically, without stopping… it was only afterwards that I understood”... or something to that effect. Hearing this quote opened up so many doors. Art School teaches you to plan art work… there wasn’t much lee-way(sic) to explore that wonderful stream of consiousness of the higher self.. It’s nice to be able to follow those courses now. :)

  • mistertrooth replied

I love Giger. Huge influence. I haven’t been formally taught art since high-school, and i left high skool early because my art teacher kicked me out of his class. Told me i could do it in the library. Small-minded small town uptight dick. His name was Dick too!

  • Carmen Cilliers

    Carmen Cilliers

Your imagination – wow! The sense of fragility of our lives just screamed at me when I opened this. Very intrigueing work.

  • mistertrooth replied

Thanks carmen – Whenever i look at this one i still can’t settle on a single explanation that covers the whole image – which is a good thing in my mind… but broadly, in personal terms, i think it’s about how i’ve allowed outside forces to take up residence in my psyche, and restrict my creative energy – even tho many of those forces weren’t built for that purpose, and had no intention of doing that – it’s a role i’ve assigned them …. hence the sort of benevolent energy of the brick man – like he really doesn’t understand thw potential he has to harm the moth …..

  • Carmen Cilliers

    Carmen Cilliers

You talking about all those sub personalities and other nasties – yip, I know what you mean. So, with what you have just said, fragility, still comes to mind. We are so fragile when it comes down to how manipulated we are by the forces of our psyche. I like your general way of thinking.

Unbelievable, I am truly amazed and impressed, this must have taken hours to get it just right…...

  • mistertrooth replied

sure did – i think i wrote above how it started out as a backdrop for an entirely different character, who just didn’t work for me in the end, and the brick man slipped into my head …. this one evolved really slowly over many many hours. Thanks for your comment ;)

  • liljo

    liljo

...brick man senses his spirit in the moth, they are the same colours, he realises the hammer can be used to break down the wall and he will be free to enter the garden beyond, to be part of nature, not separate…. I’ve looked at this for a long time, and all your work… love your honesty, transparency and clarity of mind. x

  • mistertrooth replied

Thanks jo! Your interpretation totally works for me … building on it a little, perhaps he hesitates because in order to pick up the hammer, he has to release the moth and let it go where it pleases, and to follow it, he has to destroy the wall – which obviously is part of him too… and the gas mask perhaps symbolises his fear that he may not survive conditions on the other side… he hasn’t touched that apple either – i reckon it was thrown over the wall by somebody – triggering the whole dillemma he faces…? these are all fresh thoughts, by the way..

  • liljo

    liljo

Perhaps… since bricks aren’t known for their imagination or agility, the story is that Moth chose to land on Brickman because it saw him as he truly is… really a fellow moth camouflaged as bricks in order to fit in?.... If he bites the apple might he recover his winged form… and follow Moth over the wall into the garden? Whadddya reckon? :) If he knocks down the wall the other brickpeople will level the garden and turn it into suburbia!

  • mistertrooth replied

wow! There’s a whole new picture emerging there…!
