The Golden Orb Spider (Nephila pilipes) spans its giant nets is commonly found in forests and gardens. Females are large and grow to a body size of 30-50 mm (overall size upto 20 cm), with males growing to 5–6 mm. It is one of the biggest spiders in the world. This spider is a female: the males are very much smaller and only millimeters long. Even though the Golden Orb Spider is very colorful and can reach the size of a hand, it is completely harmless to humans: only under very bid duress will it try to bite, but it carries no poison that can be dangerous to humans.

Goodness, what a spinner, it looks like a fishing net, what a great capture

  • I wish I could have got a clearer shot. My regular camera stopped working so I was using a backup which isn’t quite up to the same standard.
