The Mayor of The City of Homeless

We have become our own city
our own township
We are homeless
yet we are a population in itself
large enough
thousands and thousands of us
wander the streets
wander your neighborhoods
wander your churches
Yes, we are a city within ourselves
we are thousands and thousands
I am the mayor of our nomadic tribe
of our township of pilgrims and to you pariahs
we stand on street corners with signs
inconspicuous, invisible to you
we are not consumers
we are not home owners obviously
we are not working class anymore
we are standing waiting for time to pass us by
waiting for kindness
angry in our shoes
you disdain us
but do you know what
we disdain you too
you are greed
insatiable greed
you are apathy
and whitewashed compassion
as you give us your discarded kindness
not even a dog would want
we are mud stains under your shoes
I see it in your eyes
not created In The Image of God
but to you we are an inferior breed
whose God you think less of
to you we are The Children of a Lesser God
we belong to the bus stops
we belongs to the side walks
we belong to the other side
to the other side of the tracks
to you we sleep near the bone yards
of abandoned buildings
yes, where my office is located
on the wreckage of our civility
we sleep under bridges
and in abandoned cars
in junk yards when the watch dogs go home
we sleep in your nightmares
waiting for you
to come join us
standing as zombie populations
you fear us
more than you hate us
wondering if this will be you tomorrow
you fear us
more than you know
you wonder if this will be your last day of work
if this is the last pay check you will ever cash?
I know that expression that countenance
of ghastly white horror
as if you have seen a ghost
the ghost is me
we haunt you
we haunt you
as we stand on corners with signs
will work for food
we haunt you as we ask for bus fare
as we ask for money for food or even
a beer or a cigarette,
you pretend you do not know us
or see us
but we are always standing out of the corner
of your eye,
if you adjust your vision
you will see me
if by some miracle you allow God to
adjust your hearts
and stop playing “church”
and stop pretending that you know God
really know Him
Jesus stands on my corner
with nowhere to lay His Godly head
with nothing to eat
you say you recognize Jesus
would you know Him if you saw Him?
with all of your marble floors
and satin curtains
with the pulpit of oak
and all of the pews just purchased
with your plans of building a bigger more
glorious sanctuary
I am the mayor sitting on the corner
in clothes that reek
and you think I am drunk
but not the way you think
drunk with sadness
drunk with a broken heart
you think I am stoned
if I am stoned
it is to forget
that I am a human being
as my heart believes it less
I am the mayor of a township
of a city
that is neglected
that receives no aid
a city without jobs
without schools
a ghost town
of the living
a population
that is living but dead
you fear me
you judge me
you hate me
but you do not know me
I am created out of the dust
as you were
our women taken from the ribs
of our men
our children
born from a womb
not hatched from an egg
we bleed
we hunger
we thirst
we weep
we love
we are afraid
when we sleep behind
when a park bench is all we can find
when cold freezes over our flesh
we shiver
we sweat
from the blaze of an unforgiving sun
we need bathrooms
that are not there
I do not have the luxuries
you have
of plumbing
a refrigerator
a bed
a pillow
I pray when I am not angry
and cry out to God
as you do
but my cries pierce the darkness
of my nights
there are no artificial lights to turn on
only The Light of Jesus to comfort
my real thoughts are you fear me
I was once like you
sitting in front of a television
on Sundays in a sanctuary
Mondays thru Fridays
working at some job
that no longer exists
I lived in a structure
I once called home
now, the mayor of a city
you deny exists
