Ida

Today Ida came up to my teller window
with one arm she handed me her check

a tractor amputated at 3

she knew I was a “cutter”
because she was one

scarred flesh seems to recognize
and support each other

at 7 sadness took the form of a razor
mutilating her childhood

I asked her why she’d done that
she told me abuse cannot contain
itself in a child’s body

a child still needs a womb
and she didn’t have that

a lady came to my teller window
with “bloody” gauze on her fore-arm

“What happened?” I asked

“I am on dialysis” she said
“My kidneys failed and will
never work again.”

chemo-therapy and radiation
destroyed her organs

in trying to save her science
slowly kills her

amidst such dishevelled lives
the women raise their hands
heavenward

“Praise the Lord”, two broken lives
recite in unison

I am awed
tragedy inspires the soul
to be grateful
