Child's Play

Written for the Gaia – The Living Planet Competition

Mum? Why do they spear whales? It looks like it hurts.
And why’s that boat spilling oil? The seals are getting sick.

Dad? Why does our TV have a red light? It’s not even on.
And why’s that building all lit up? No one’s there at night.

Granny? Why don’t we save the rain? We could water the plants.
And why’s the radiator on? It’s still summer for ages.

Grandpa? Why has the forest gone? The birds have no home.
And why’s there a sofa in the field? It’s not a lounge.

Nan? Why did he drop that? There’s a bin over there.
And why’s she driving a big car? They don’t have any kids.

Pops? Why did that turtle swallow a bag? It’s not food.
And why’s there a dolphin in that net? We don’t eat them.

Miss? Why do they want that rhino’s horn? It won’t be able to charge.
And why’s she wearing a tiger’s fur? The tiger will get cold.

Sir? Why doesn’t that shark have a fin? It can’t swim now.
And why’s that coral white? It’s not very pretty.

Mum? Why do I have to wear sun cream? The sun’s miles away.
And why can’t I go in the sea? I won’t touch that stuff.

Because?
Because.
