Music Box Magic

Written for Star Twisters 13, Treasured Childhood Memories

Found this quite a hard one – thanks filfil for the challenge!!

Music Box Magic belongs to the following groups:

Twisted Tales

She was so special. Whenever I opened the intricate silver box she’d rise from red velvet to twirl and twinkle, arms spread wide in a comforting embrace. Her music cast a spell, surrounding me with light. I’d shut my eyes and escape, as it lifted me to peace.

I took her everywhere, used her anywhere.

The first time my father’s sneaking fingers reached for me, she welcomed me into oblivion. As my mother’s shrill voice reminded me of my worthlessness, she covered my ears. When my brother used me as a punch bag, she gave me strength.

People always remarked on how lucky I was, surviving the fire. And I knew as long as I carried her around I would be safe.

Reaching down into my desk drawer I pulled out the box.

Sacked for no reason? We’d see about that.

I opened the lid and let myself drift off as the first strains of music tinkled out.

And then there she was, my fairy godmother, anticipation glinting in her eyes. Flames danced excitedly down her wand as she enquired in her little old lady voice,

“So dear, who is it today?”

What a twist. Instead of a wicked step mother, it’s the fairy godmother! Toward the end I sort of got the feeling that she was getting a little “help”, but not like that. Good job.

thanks JC, i found this one sooo hard…it would not come all day & then i just found out i’ve got a job interview tomorrow (eekk!) and so have to do some prep and suddenly the end wrote itself!!! but yes i found it difficult to not show she was getting help along the way!

I like the way you set the scene and fed us insights into her tortured soul before pulling the twist.

  • Miri replied

thanks Robert, I’m glad it worked…it was one where the twist wasn’t clear to me till fairly late on in the process! Was one of those frustrating ones!

I think Damian said it best,”hitman in a box”. You really led us away from the twist with the “sweetness” of the main character. I hope your job interview went well.

  • Miri replied

“hitman in a box” is great – i hadn’t thought of it like that LOL, glad it worked! Thanks Natella, job int is this afternoon so fingers crossed!

Ooh, nice turnaround Miri, the line, ‘as it lifted me to peace’, had me in a different direction till the ending.
