I have been visiting the egret rookery at Avery Island in Iberia Parish, Louisiana. The egrets are in mating/nesting mode now and are displaying all sorts of interesting behaviors. Here is a pair, dressed in their marital garb, sitting side by side like a couple in love, tenderly attending to each other, preening each other, enjoying the other’s close presence. I will be posting other pictures in addition to this one, some of egrets at nest building, stick gathering, ritual dancing, or just resting. It is quite a drama to see.

Thank you very much, Gina; I liked the side by side stance and the fellowship these two seemed to be enjoying!

Wonderful, Bonnie. This is a wonderful time. I can’t wait to see other images from the rookery. Meanwhile, check out mine from a great blue heron rookery. I think many of the behaviors are similar.
This is a beautiful image,
excellent work, Ann
This is absolutely fascinating Bonnie! What weird and wonderful behaviour and clothing they wear during this time!!! Lovely shot and look forward to more! ;o)
Thank you very much, Krys! I have been amazed by the weird and wonderful scenes I’ve been privy to experience. Graceful dancing, sweet eyes, and even some wild pecking when competitors are involved. What would we do without birds! I know you feel the same way!

The feathers are spectacular and that glorious splash of green is beautiful. A lovely, gentle image, resting before the hectic times of parenthood…….

Hectic times of parenthood mean the delicate feathers will probably fall and by the time the fledglings are away from the nest, the parents will look worn and haggard. These honeymoon days, though, are delightful to watch; thank you for sharing my joy and enthusiasm. Your grebes make me happy, too.
