I took this picture of an American goldfinch as it enjoyed its breakfast on a beautiful Sunday morning.
The American goldfinch migrates southward during the winter months and every year a flock comes to my backyard feeders in southern Louisiana. When they arrive, they look a bit brownish/greenish as they are sporting their winter plumage, but as the days grow warmer, their feathers begin to brighten to a golden yellow. Just when they are approaching their peak color, they leave for their more northerly homes again. They love to eat sunflower seeds and thistle seeds and are they ever voracious! They are delightful little birds to watch and to listen to as well since they have a soft twitter that is so sweet.
