The mother bluebird in the middle is flanked by two of her babies from her last brood of the summer. This little female is such a valiant mother; she has her “good side” pointing toward the camera, so she looks beautiful and sprightly, but if she were to turn facing the other direction, her disability would show. Sometime during the summer she lost her left eye, but that didn’t stop her one bit. She continued to hunt for bugs and feed her babies, and as you can see, she’s still around making the best of her situation in life. I am so inspired by the disabled birds I see at my feeders, how they carry on no matter what afflicts them. We can all learn a lot from their courage and perseverance.
It’s hard for me to get the mother with her young all at the same time, so I took three photos, one of the mother and one each of the fledglings and blended them together for this family portrait.
