Artist's Description

This magnificent Viceroy butterfly was sipping nectar from wildflowers when the late afternoon sun illuminated it in a bath of light. Closely resembling a monach, the viceroy holds its wings vertically whereas the monarch’s wings are angled downward. Unlike the monarch which is poisonous to birds, the viceroy is not; however, because it looks so much like a monarch, birds that have eaten monarchs stay away from the viceroy. Hence, the viceroy’s resemblance to the monarch is actually a protection against predators with a previous experience with the poisonous butterfly.
