Sweet Dough Blackberry Pie

Cheryl Ridge just posted a lovely photo of sun-kissed blackberries which reminded me of an old family recipe I have for Sweet Dough Blackberry Pie. It’s been around for generations and a favorite here in Cajun country. If you don’t have fresh berries, most large supermarkets carrry frozen blackberries which are just fine. Hope someone can use this, maybe as an alternative to the traditional Thanksgiving pies this holiday! Happy picture taking and happy baking!

Sweet Dough Blackberry Pie


Mix: one egg and one-half cup sugar
Melt: one half cup shortening
Add: one half cup milk, two cups flour, two teaspoons baking powder, one teaspoon vanilla

Roll out and place in a pie plate (Do not bake yet)

Bring fresh or frozen berries to a boil. Add one egg, one cup sugar, heaping tablespoon cornstarch and one tablespoon butter. Cook to desired thickness.

Pour thickened filling into unbaked shell. Roll the edges over the top in a kind of flip flop fashion. Bake at 325 degrees for about 25 minutes or until crust is golden brown. Let cool before serving.
