Primary Pals
An indigo bunting and a Northern cardinal were sharing space on a brick ledge on my patio. I was struck by the beauty of their primary colors side by side against the vibrant green background of the trees just budding in the warmth of spring. It was hard to get them both in sharp focus so I had to splice two photos together to try to achieve the results.
This was the first time I’d ever seen these two kinds of birds together and when I researched them in my field guides, I learned they are actually relatives, cousins of sorts, that belong to the finch family, so very fitting that they came together to share a meal.

Can’t see the join Bonnie and I’ve now and again used two photos to create one with better dof – glad I’m not alone in my jiggerypokery! ;o) What a stunning contrast these two guys make – you have such brightly coloured birds – most of ours are pretty dull but they do sing beautifully!!! Are these guys good songsters???? I bet they are that too!!!! Oooh I’m green with envy…. bit sinful for Good Friday….......... ;o)

Hi Bonnie,
once again an absolutely superb shot of beautiful birds in your corner of the US…I adore Cardinals. We used to have both them and Blue Jays in Virginia. But even more impressive than your usual genius, is the post production work and ‘splicing together’ of two shots.
And how amazing that they’re cousins of a sort, and belong to the same family….a deep analogy in there somewhere I think!! ;)...xxxxOo

We have the cardinals here … fairly commonly, but I’ve only seen an indigo one time in all these years!!! i just assumed they were insectivores as they don’t come to my feeders. Your seeing the two together is a rare and special event!!!!!! My congratz!!!!! Gorgeous image!! I’m in awe (and envy, lol!!
