My Big Disappointment.

I have just returned from a trip to Brisbane, my husband and I went there to attend my son’s wedding on the 16th of Feb. From the time we were to go things just didn’t go right. First of all the week before we were to take delivery of a new car, well we finally got it four days later. We were supposed to start our trip on Sunday the 10th and take a few days to get to Brissy doing some camping along the way, but it rained didn’t it! Anyway we set off on Tuesday afternoon and got to Townsville where we had to stay on Wednesday as the roads were cut south around Proserpine and no one could go north or south from there. Thursday we set off after the roads were reopened, we got to Mackay that night and about 2am the rains started, it rained like I have never heard it rain in my life, it never stopped all night and eased off around 9am still raining but not as heavy. It was raining so hard through the night that they said they were getting 130mm per hr, now that was a heck of a lot of water and where did it go? into peoples homes, the river was flooded, the town went under, the airport was flooded and closed, the roads were cut again north and south of the town… again we were stuck, so we spent Friday in Mackay in a cabin at a caravan park. We were lucky as we were on higher ground in the park, others weren’t so lucky and had to have their vans moved to higher ground, for some it was a bit late as the water inundated their vans and motorhomes, it was sad to the owners upset over it. I got some good shots that I will post in a few days.
Well Saturday arrived and the roads south were reopened so off we went knowing that I would miss the wedding, which of course we did. I arrived with a heavy heart that night, where we stayed with a dear friend.
Sunday was a good day though as we had a lovely lunch with my son and his new bride, her mother, my friend and my eldest son. We also had a few days with them as we took them to Iluka with us which they loved. My husband and I went on a night shoot into Brisbane city with another friend and her husband, we had a great time trying to get “That Shot” we all want. I don’t think I got it but I came away very happy with what I did get.
Ok now the time came when we were to come home, we set off from Brisbane on Sat and drove to Rockhampton where we stayed the night… there was a beaut thunderstorm with a lot of rain at 4am so we got up after it and set off as you never know!!! Guess what… Rocky had so much rain on Sunday night they got flooded, we thought we did the right thing by leaving when we did and just as well!! Ok we get home Sunday and it hasn’t really stopped since. Tonight it is pouring again and there is threat of flooding in the Barron River which runs near our town, thankfully we are far enough away from it and it won’t worry us.
I guess this holiday will stick in our minds as the one we didn’t really need.
Well at least we are safe and sound in our little domain now.
Motto.. Never go south during the “Wet Season” in the Far North.

aww minnie, sorry you missed the wedding, however you did see history being made, you were safe, have a story to tell for the rest of your life, the most important thing ..which im sure your son will agree on..is that you were safe, you could have been one of the ones who’s camp was covered in water, you could have been stuck in the road as the rain came down, you could have never actually made it there Or back home, sorry again you missed the wedding, but not sorry you made it there and back home….safely
