plastic flowers i painted when i was 17 or 16 (once upon a time)...

plastic flower arrangement i painted in high school (once upon a time) with cheap prang student grade watercolor pans.
.
please don’t hate me but i used to think i was a better artist than my art teacher in high school.. ;P
he decided that he’d like to help me and painted a cluster of tiny flowers… i hated it… i hated him…
i hated him with all my mighty passion for ruining my piece (but only for this reason)... respected him for many other things.
the style’s so different from the rest of the painting,
but i had to finish in the style he’s started…

prang watercolor on french arches paper

You probably were a better artist than your teacher – I know I was. Fortunately I didn’t hate mine and we would have a symbiotic relationship of mutual inspiration.

  • mimi yoon replied

thank you tama… i hated him just for that incident… and one other time when he cut up one of my paintings for me to do a collage project that i had no interest in… respected him for many other reasons… : )

They’re beautiful.I struggle with the teacher thing at Tafe. Not that you aren’t open to things, but sometimes I feel they don’t give you credit for being able to make a solid artistic decision on your own.Looking at your work now..I am sure he could have, and it would have been nothing short of beautiful..reminds me a little of Mexican Folk art.. :-)

  • mimi yoon replied

hi sticky flowers, i am not familiar with tafe, bust assuming that it’s an institution with teachers… i teach too… at my private art school for kids… the teachers and their students have to have that mutual respect for each other… i usually ask my students if they think the piece is finished and why…. knowing when to stop is an art…. thank you~ : )

  • Ray Schloss

    Ray Schloss

unbelievable!! seriously… this is a beautiful piece, mimi. have you released that hatred, my friend?? :0)

  • mimi yoon replied

    hi ray~ i hated him only for ruining this piece… : )
i respected him for many other things… he actually wanted to adop and support me so i would pursue art when my parents were dead against me going into art… they wanted me to go into the medical field (pharmacist or a nurse practitioner)… suppose i should clarify that in the description…
    thanks ray…

oh ya… my first guitar instructor in 5th grade told my parents not to waste any money on lessons for me as i had no natural affinity for playing. have oft thought of how nice it would be to meet her again… think she’d regret crushing a young boy’s dreams. especially after having played live about 700 times now! sure your art teacher would be crawling under a rock or something!!

  • mimi yoon replied

for sure ray… did you continue your lessons with her? probably not, huh? she must not have been a great at what she was doing… i believe a great teacher should have the ability to recognize the talent in his/her students… my mr. nielson, i don’t want him to crawl under a rock…. or anything…. he’s great person and as i’ve mentioned earlier, i was mad and hated him for that incident only… and one other time when he cut up a piece of mine… yep, i wanted to kill him…. : ) thanks ray~ : )

Oh yeah! someone I disliked already did that to me once years and years ago. I’m not given to rage, until that happens, it came up from my toes. I let him off but was very angry. These days I’d do the opposite, stay calm but drive a scissors through his fat hand. All my art teachers all they way along were either insane (in the bad way) or dickheads. I’ve met nice ones since though.
This is still a great painting, beyond me. Well done.

  • mimi yoon replied

ouch, but haha, and yes, the anger started from my toes and came up all the way to the end of my hair with fiery rush for me too… and steam out of my ears… (like in cartoons)... ;P now days, no one dares to touch my art… why are many high school art teachers a bit strange? my students come and tell me all kinds of stories about their school art teachers… but there are as many respectable ones too, yeah?....

thank you so much, simon and have not seen you for awhile… happy to see you again… : ) : ) : )

  • Erika .

    Erika .

Wow Mimi. You were so talented at such a young age….this is really incredible!!

  • mimi yoon replied

thank you so much, erika… i bet you were a great writer at young age too… if one has it, one has it… artistic talent is something one’s born with, i believe… some discover that they had it in them later on in their lives, but were still born with it… i think most artists and writers on rb fall in that “born with it” category… : )
    have a beautiful weekend, erika~ : )

OMG lol @ Yellowfury’s comment. Mimi This is so beautiful, i can see how your style sort of conflicts with his, i woulda screamed if someone touched something of mine unfinished. I wouldnt feel like it was mine anymore. Respect to the teachers but touch my work and die!

  • mimi yoon replied

hehe… i think everyone has a story or two of similar incidents… either that or all high school teachers are mr. nielson… i hear about their school art teachers from my students all the time… grown ups need to learn to respect kid’s art and their creativity and thoughts… PERIOD!!! thank you very much, kym, and have a wonderful weekend… : )

The Dali Lama once said “your worst enemy is your best teacher”, perhaps call your old teacher up and thank him, that will get rid of the anger that may be still lurking in the background. You have come a long way since Mimi.

  • mimi yoon replied

hehe… of couse i am not still upset with him… his name is mr. nielson and i respected him for many other reasons… but he was not my best teacher and would never consider him my worst enemy either… : )
    thanks, wayne~

I understand what you mean, in my art classes, the teacher would start something off for me, and I’d say thanks but once I’m seated I’d erase it all and do it myself :b

  • mimi yoon replied

hi nicolle~ smart girl… keep doing that… i don’t believe in touching other people’s art… i’ve recently written an article for a local paper about people cheating with their art and portfolios… unfortunate but people are doin’ it… and even more unfortunate because it happens mostly in asian communities due to the passion of those ignorant parents’ eagerness to get their kids into more recognized schools… or plainly because some of these kids just don’t have what it takes but they have nothing else they are good at (makes me mad just thinking about it)... i’ve been asked many many times to create portfolios for high school kids and college students to submit to art colleges for their admission…. and they are willing to pay big $$ for them… sad and disgrace to all true and talented artists…. i’ve talked to the admissions counselors at several art colleges, and they said to me that many of these cases have been busted but are still going on… i know i’m way off the subject… sorry nicolle~ have fun in those classes… keep creating… and keep erasing what they (the teachers) draw for you… : ) happy weekend…

Reminds me of the Victorian era
Beautiful how the buds are all bursting
and although “cheap” I think, overall marvelous colors for it too.
    Very Very nice Mimi…xo

  • mimi yoon replied

reminds me of the pattern of some fabrics my mom had when i was a little girl ( once upon a time ;P )... the colors on the original painting look much better than this… i couldn’t quite capture’em… i guess those cheap paints are pretty good… thank you, roy… have a wonderful weekend~ xo
