mimi yoon replied

Lovely work, reminds me of that old japanese (I think) painting of the waves…
mimi yoon replied

its a good take of the original woodblock print by Hokusai
http://www.ee.umanitoba.ca/~kinsner/about/gwave.html
>>> Gina
mimi yoon replied
hey gina… that’s the same site i downloaded the reference image from…hokusai’s great wave…
his is great, admired, and looked and searched upon as a reference by many artists… and mine is just mine and just a part of a story of mine i’m creating as i go… : )... thanks!
Brad MacDuff
I love it! The waves have hands – they’re menacing and playful at the same time. They could either be ready to pounce or to tickle… or both. What is the symbol in the top right corner?
mimi yoon replied
thanks brad… but you love everything i do : )... the symbol is a chinese character that reads mee (beauty or beautiful) which is my korean name and also one half of mimi :P … i painted it to mimic the look of an asian stamp… i had an origami crane drawn on that spot initially… was not happy with it, so moved the crane right to the center of the art to make it look as if it was about to be swallowed my the menacing waves… but i thought it looked too cartoon like, and erased it… but now i’m thinking of putting it back in….what do you think?
this is the scene above the surface while bi is being drowned by the tentacles in untitled III... i need the crane(bi’s dreaming soul) to show the panic and to show that they(two paintings) are connected… : )

strange cooincidence – by chance, today, i was doing some research into japanese prints and have been googling whatever i can find on hokusai. then i sign in to rb and find you have posted this… seems i was riding your brain waves again (no pun intended – just worked out that way…)
scott allison

the great wave by hiroshige
mimi yoon replied
naruto rapids… yes, his waves are beautiful too… : )
chemis
i love japanese woodblocks! i have many prints :]
they way you have rendered this is exceptional – so much raw vitality
i especially love (and am intrigued by) the layering of drips in the background – i love the fact that they are “dripping up”
did you flip your canvas around before you painted the wave?
the effect is awesome
mimi yoon replied
chemis!!! thanks much for noticing that… the paint drips from the toning process looked so much better upwards when i turned the canvas around to decide the orientation… i wanted the waves to rise and the upward drips enhanced that mood… thank you again chemis ! : )
midnightdreamer

mimi yoon replied

Holly Ringland
mimi, whether it’s a pair of stilettos, an abstract or a portrait, i find your work so peaceful. and although this wave is enormous and wild and dark, there’s something tranquil about it that makes me wish i was in the middle of it…looking upside down at the world dripping around me. this is an exceptionally beautiful piece.
mimi yoon replied
thank you soooo much holly…. allow me to join you in the middle of my painting… looking upside down at the world… but i see more crashing than dripping…. beautiful words holly….
Holly Ringland
p.s. ohhh, i just ‘clicked’... i know this song well… it goes so perfectly with this work.
Rayven
what a nice remake of the great wave! I love that piece. I love the modern feel to it. It’s like a snowy wave! Almost like it was frozen in place or something. Awesomeness! :D
