What a thing it would be to see if the sandstone cliffs of America’s Grand Canyon overlooked a beautiful cerulean sea instead of the roiling Colorado River. Such was the general inclination of my wonderings at this point in my wandering (at times almost in a daze) about Kilbarri National Park (WA Australia), stumbling from one awe inspiring scene to another. The rocky reds here are as intense in their reflection as to set me on the heels of a suspicion that they are infused with some internal power source. Even in the shade I came away with the conviction that to brush against the rock would be to smear myself in rich oils of Cadmium Scarlet, still wet in recent application by some overindulgent master painter. The pigment is the result of oxidation of iron ore, present in the extreme within Kilbarri’s sandstone. Who could have imagined that rust might be this beautiful? ©Miles A Moody All Rights Reserved
