Niuean Performers
The tropical island of Niue is situated 19˚south of the Equator. It’s 2,200 km’s northeast of New Zealand, 386 km’s east of Tonga and 900 km’s west of Rarotonga in the Cook Islands.
The name ‘Niue’ translates as ‘Behold! The coconut!’
But in this image “behold the warriors”, performers dressed in the traditional manner of old.
“Niue”- known as the “Rock of Polynesia, Niuea shares a history of settlement from Tonga, Samoa and The Cook Islands and whilst being related to other Polynesians, speaks a dialectically different language. Originally called Niuē fekai meaning “wild Niuē”, it is now still a unspoilt and inviting place, peaceful and beautiful. The Dancers take the guise of the warriors of old, fierce, strong and loyal to their chief, at the Annual “Pacific Unity Festival” ( Tempe, Sydney, Australia.)
