Artist Statement:
Exploring the multi-layered complexities of the human personality, and variations of perceived identity & emotive responses.

How do we see ourselves? How does our perception of ourselves & others change according to our beliefs, experiences & relationships?

These questions & analysis form the foundations of the framework for this series of self-portraits. Relating to both personal & societal perceptions of, and responses to, sexuality, identity & grief. As the narrative for this series, my aim is to combine these elements in the hope of taking my observations of strong & often complex emotions and thought processes into forming a challenging & thought provoking connection with the viewer.

I realized that using me as the subject was the strongest and most honest way of projecting & portraying the elements and emotion necessary, this made the use of self portraits a natural process for this series.

OH Michael! So glad to see you uploaded this wonderful and powerful image. Makes me really uncomfortable but, this is a good thing. Great art should challenge our comfort zones. Brilliant work.

  • Many thanks Ray for your support, and yes i agree that art can contribute strongly in challenging our perceptions & perceived comfort zones, however the story or narrative of this series is for me, most important, thank you
