Dynamic Jupiter by

This image of Jupiter shows the transit of the moons Ganymede and Europa, with the moon Io coming out from behind Jupiter in the last 2 frames.

The Great Red Spot (GRS) also comes into view.

The image was taken with my 12" Newtonian Telescope and a DMK21AU04 webcam from my backyard on the Central Coast of NSW, Australia.

A look at the capture and processing of this image, and see an animation here:

About Mike Salway

My name is Mike Salway and I’m an amateur astronomer and photographer.

I’m the co-founder of the Amateur Astronomy community site, IceInSpace, and my personal blog site and image gallery is at mikesalway.com.au

I love high resolution planetary imaging and deep-space imaging using a telescope, and I love capturing wide field vistas that involve a lovely foreground scene combined with astronomical interest in the sky.

Mike, have you ever tried viewing any of these as 3D pairs? With the planet’s slight rotation as in the bottom 2, it gives a great stereo effect.

Hi Duncan, no I haven’t, but I can see how it would work. I might have to try that out.

3rdrock – thanks again. When the conditions are good I usually capture detail on Ganymede and Io regularly.
