Smiley Face Conjunction Panorama by

On December the 1st 2008, Venus, Jupiter and the Crescent Moon came together and formed a unique shape in the sky – a smiley face!

This panorama was captured at Green Point, overlooking Brisbane Water, on the Central Coast of NSW, Australia.

My name is Mike Salway and I’m an amateur astronomer and photographer.

I’m the co-founder of the Amateur Astronomy community site, IceInSpace, and my personal blog site and image gallery is at mikesalway.com.au

I love high resolution planetary imaging and deep-space imaging using a telescope, and I love capturing wide field vistas that involve a lovely foreground scene combined with astronomical interest in the sky.

Thanks Marnie – it was great that so many people got to see this reasonably rare event. It got a lot of media attention which helped.
