Observing the Milky Way
This image was taken at the South Pacific Star Party in April 2007.
It’s a composite of a tracked 5 minute exposure for the sky, with a non-tracked 5 minute exposure for the foreground.
Taken with a Canon 350D and Sigma 17-70mm lens. Processed in Photoshop.
It’s now the feature image on the ASNSW’s SPSP page.

by tracked do you mean moving the camera slowly across the sky while it’s on a slow shutter speed? Awesome image by the way!
Mike Salway replied
Thanks for the feedback.
Yes – tracked means the camera is sitting on top of an equatorial mount – it’s used by astronomers so that the telescope (in most cases) moves at the same rate of rotation as the night sky above.
So, combined with an open shutter (5 minutes in this case), you can take deep images of the sky without star trails!
oddoutlet
wow, it sounds all very technical! Can I just ask-does the type of photography you do more expensive than usual in terms of equipment? I bet the results are worth it though aye!
Mike Salway replied
It can be very expensive, some telescopes can cost $5k+ – but it doesn’t have to be. You can get reasonable ones for under $1k. Really no different than expensive camera lenses.
But yes, it’s a great hobby and the results are worth it.
