Acrobatic Downy Woodpecker Picoides pubescens
Cooper Marsh, Lancaster, Ontario, Canada

Best viewed larger. Thanks

I was down at The Marsh on yet another beautiful day (will winter ever get here? I really hope not!) and, as I was walking along the trail to the boardwalk, trying to ignore the swearing from the Chickadees, I heard a drumming coming from a nearby tree. I looked up and spotted this wee Downy working away and flitting from branch to branch. A number of shots taken, then it flew to a bush nearby. I changed position and grabbed another few, then it buggered off over the horizon. I pulled this one up on screen, did a double take and saw that only its beak was in contact. I was reminded very young children trying to impress the folks with their gymnastic prowess by doing handstands. Feet about a foot above the ground and slowly getting higher until the wee one either went right over or fell sideways, all the time calling out, “Lookit Ma! Lookit!”
