The Seaway International Bridge and what’s left of the Domtar Paper Mill. A little ironic – the end of the day, the end of the mill and the bridge is going to be replaced.

    fantastic Mike.

  • Many, many thanks, Brock. It was a beautiful (but coolish) evening today, so I wandered over to the canal and blasted off a few. 70 to be exact.

Magnificent shot, Mike! Everything comes to an end, I guess!

  • Thanks so very much, Deb. Greatly appreciated! Domtar’s no great loss, neither is the bridge. On a brighter note, it’s almost the end of winter! Yay!

So the bridge’s loss is a non-event? I’ve always thought of it as pretty attractive. Sure makes a pretty picture. We’re having this fight over what to do about the fine old Peace Bridge between Buffalo & Ft. Erie. What will the old Seaway be replaced with?

  • Thanks, Sheila. It is a fine looking bridge, but is showing its age. Constant maintenance required, the concrete supports are crumbling, etc. It’s also one of two spans and this one ends on Cornwall Island. The other span goes from the island to the U.S. The toll booth and Canadian customs are on Cornwall Island, part of the reserve. When they decided to arm the Border Guards, the Island’s residents protested (peacefully), so said Guards beat a hasty and the border was closed for a number of weeks. Now the toll booth and customs are at the Cornwall end of the bridge. And line ups can be right across this span. There’s been talk of a new bridge for a while now and this past incident has speeded things up considerably. The new bridge will not be encroaching on Native land.
