A dreary Sunday morning, minus 5c, with a wind chill of minus 15. The river is frozen right across here, and the ice is probably thick enough to support cars. The sun is peeking out through the clouds occasionally and giving the ice a silvery sheen. The trees on the island are bare, waiting for the spring’s warmth. Spider web tracks of snowmobiles trace their path from the island and beyond, perhaps bringing in contraband, perhaps just out for the fun of it. New York State and the Mohawk Reserve is just on the other side.

I remember seeing the river like that! Looks so familiar and sure brings back memories. Nice ambience Mike!

  • Thanks so very much, Jann. Greatly appreciate your very kind words!
I’ve been trying to get out and take some shots for a while now. Finally braved the elements today. Minus 5 wasn’t bad – until I got the wind from the river. Left the gloves in the car, of course!

It looks colder than -5C alright!

  • Thanks, Al. It felt a lot colder, too! That wind was just whistling down the river – nothing to stop it.

LOL I have heard many stories about the cold air around the mighty St. Lawrence…. and you have captured it here Mike!!!! Shivery cold… it must be time for a hot toddy!!!!!
    Brenda

  • Many, many thanks, Brenda. Really appreciate the “favourite” too! You’re so very kind, my dear friend.
I must admit that it was a tad chilly, mainly due to the wind. Wouldn’t have been too bad if the sun had come out.

great shot Mike…I was born in Cornwall so this brings back so many memories…perfect!

  • Thanks so very much, James. This one was also taken at Marie’s! Straight across the river. Been a lot of changes in town since you left, mostly for the better. And it’s a bit of a coincidence that you’re living in Leeds – that’s where Dad was from. Middleton to be exact.

Yes, you’ve got it. Now if we can just keep the Asian Carp out….

  • Many thanks, Sheila. They’re not too bad down this end, but up near the dam they’re quite prolific.

Beautiful shot of the St. Lawrence, Mike! When I was in Cornwall it was winter but the river wasn’t frozen. I think they were having some sort of ice sculpture fest by the town hall at the time.

  • Thanks so very much, Deb. The river doesn’t freeze over on the stretch in town – the current’s too strong. You get about maybe 10 to 20 feet from the bank frozen. This was taken about 5 miles down the road at a resto bar called the Blue Anchor. Great Place to go if you’re ever down this way again. And that winter festival was this weekend. Yawn……:o)

Lol! That’s what I thought of the winter festival, too. It was more of a brief drive-by. And I’ve been to the Blue Anchor many times! Loved their poutine! I’m pretty sure I had a few friendly games of pool there as well. Great atmosphere and the people were fun!!

  • That must have been a while back. There hasn’t been a pool table there in some time. Did ye have a Perch Roll???
As far as the winter festival goes, I think it’s fizzled out. Too many kids destroying the sculptures, lack of innovation on the part of the organisers and the usual Cornwall apathy. A pity, because there’s a huge canal just waiting to be used. Hello? Hello? Ever hear of Winterlude in Ottawa? Maybe the organisers should take an hour’s drive up the road and check it out….Sorry. On a rant again…..

Cool that your rivers freeze Mike. I have never seen the ones around here do that. Awesome shot!

  • Thanks so very much Jonice! Many thanks, too for the “Fav” – greatly appreciated! The river’s only just frozen over – it’s been pretty mild up here this winter and there’s still quite a lot of open water.

You’re right, Mike! It was back in the early 90’s when I was there! Some of the people I was with had the perch roll, but I’m not a big fan of fish. I agree with you on the lack of innovation, inspiration OR interest that the organizers of the festival seemed to possess. There were maybe 10 sculptures (nothing that sticks out in my mind either) but I do remember they had been vandalized.

  • Aye, and there’s still nae birdies. Although some o’ the dafter ones huv stuck aroond an’ are stayin’ in the open bits where the watter is movin’ too fast tae freeze.
