The canal is frozen over by January and, in the shallower areas, remnants of last year’s plants are still above the surface.
Cornwall Canal, Cornwall, Ontario, Canada
January 17, 2010

Sony Alpha 700, Sigma 28 to 300 at 135mm, circular polariser
iso 800, spot metered, aperture priority F22.0, 1/350 second

The iso 800 resulted in the grainy effect – I normally don’t use this high a setting.

In love with Ma Nature! Always have been, always will be. Let’s keep her safe, eh?

Love this photograph not a mark in the snow not even a foot print

  • Thanks so very much, Lynn, and many thanks for the wonderful compliment of adding this to your favourites. Greatly appreciate it! There’s probably no footprints because this is about 8 feet down from the banks of the canal and very hard to get to, plus it’s wide open and the wind just whistles across the area, smoothing everything out.

Brrrrrr! yet standing tall in such diverse weather.

  • Many thanks. It was a tad cool – about 20 degrees or so, but the wind was wicked!

The ISO 800 works well for you Mike!!!! A great capture… love the contrast between the earthy brown cattails and the icey canal…. Fav, young man!!!

  • Greatly appreciated on all counts, Brenda. Thanks so very, very much! A beautiful, if somewhat cold, winter’s day. Not a cloud in the sky, so the lighting was wonderful. That old canal is a treasure trove of images waiting to be taken!

  • As far as using iso 800, I forgot to change my camera’s settings from when I was playing around with it the night before. Shhhh – don’t tell anyone!

    Lovely bleak winter shot Mike.

  • Many thanks, Al. Not too bleak, though. After all, the sun was shining (for the first time in weeks), but the wind was a little brisk!
