Cell block 3 is one of the oldest in the jail. Block 3 was used for female prisoners, but this was later changed to a different area of the jail. Initially, the cells were equipped with army style cots but these were later replaced with cement slabs in 1990.
Inmates were assigned to protective custody cells if they were serving time for sex related offences or if they were identified as being in danger from other inmates.
