One Island in a Thousand by Mikell Herrick

Currently unavailable for purchase

After crossing a bridge that spans the St. Lawrence River, from Canada back into Upstate New York in the US, I immediately pulled over and walked back to the bridge to take this picture. The Thousand Islands, at the eastern end of Lake Ontario, is a magical area that includes parts of both countries and is beloved by summer visitors each year. Many islands are privately owned and have cottages on them. It is a seasonal paradise.

I saw this breifly as I passed in 2006 – but have always been fascinated and would love to explore one day

  • It’s well worth a visit, Robyn. A number of years ago, my husband and I spent some time camping there (two summers in a row) and also cruising around the islands and inlets and passes on the water in jetski…it was an awesome way to see the area up close and appreciate its beauty. I’ve taken the bridges over to Canada more than a few times…this recent trip I just had to get out and walk back for a few photos…it’s such a unique spot.
