For over 100 years residents and visitors to Newhaven used the sandy beach within the Harbour wall. It was a safe beach where small children could paddle and build sand castles. It was also a great place to walk your dog.
Several years ago The French owners of the port closed access to the beach citing health & Safety reasons.
Basically the do not want to pay for the upkeep of the steps down to the sands.
There has been ongoing battles through the courts to have it re opened.
This year the high court granted “Village Green” status to the beach.
This should be a victory but the port authority are delaying in appealing the decision and so the beach is still barred.
This summer an ongoing battle, sees “The Pixies” break open the security gates usually at night allowing the public access.
The port authorities will return and repair them ( I am sure it would be cheaper to repair the steps).
I took my dog down to the beach at 08:30 this morning and unfortunately arrived just as the repair crew finished their work.
The Knickers are a statement to the owners.
We will win eventually
Long Live the Pixies
