View of the Coniston Fells from Wetherlam.
Our annual holiday to the Lake District gave us near perfect conditions.
Warm sunshine in the valleys but still a fair amount of snow & ice on north & west facing slopes of the fells.
From the cottage at Holme Ground we ascended Wetherlam via Low Tilberthwaite. We followed the path to the right of the Gill to the Copper mine ruins. From here we picked out our own route to Wetherlam Edge. The final 700ft of ascent required careful navigation of the icy conditions.
On our descent we headed towards Coniston and then branched off down Steel Edge. The western slopes of the edge had some pristine snow which lent itself to some impromptu tobogganing using a survival bag…..great fun.
Reaching lower ground, it was off with the warm weather gear for the return walk through the woods keeping our eyes open for the Greater spotted woodpeckers we had seen earlier in the day.
