when i was a teenager i had two very special friends, best friends, we were like sisters….Marvette an aboriginal/islander and Prawn or Naomi, a Norfolk Islander, our fave song was ‘Ebony and Ivory’…..i am the Ivory and they are the Ebony…..Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder sing this together here

Even though I was the victim of racial abuse throughout my childhood, (because i was a white child living in a predominently aboriginal community and my father was a policeman) I learned to love and be loved by those in a different aboriginal community…these gorgeous people accepted me, loved me, and made me feel as though we were one people….i can never forget their great love and acceptance of me…..it was a perfect balance for the abuse i’d received earlier in my life, and it helped me to see both sides of the equation…

Here are the lyrics to Ebony and Ivory…i live by this code, let’s teach them to our children and change the mistakes of the past by breeding tolerance:

Ebony and ivory live together in perfect harmony
Side by side on my piano keyboard, oh lord, why dont we?
We all know that people are the same where ever we go
There is good and bad in evryone,
We learn to live, we learn to give
Each other what we need to survive together alive.

Ebony and ivory live together in perfect harmony
Side by side on my piano keyboard, oh lord why dont we?

Ebony, ivory living in perfect harmony
    Ebony, ivory, ooh

We all know that people are the same where ever we go
There is good and bad in evryone,
We learn to live, we learn to give
Each other what we need to survive together alive.

Ebony and ivory live together in perfect harmony
Side by side on my piano keyboard, oh lord why dont we?

Ebony, ivory living in perfect harmony

So tempting to write a deep and meaningful response but, like all your designs, so pleasant, well-done.
I wonder if Marvette and Prawn will like this cocktail of faces. :)

  • i hope so..but they prob aren’t on the internet much… prawn sort of still wanders from town to town, and marvette is working hard…she and her mum :Aunty Maureen work on film production together (in white shirt on right) and here is one of the screenplays they worked on together…Marvette wrote a story about an aboriginal girl who doesn’t look aboriginal here

The story about Susan with the red curly hair (as usual) is a little bit related to what I originally wanted to write: At my favourite school, I taught with a fellow whose way with the kids I admired so much. (He had what used to be called the OA class and GA, in high schools.) It was only when, just once I as invited to his parents place that it really registered with me that he was Asian.
He had an Asian name. Looked Asian but it had not really, well, registered with me until then. Sounds corny. Is true.

  • yes, it’s funny how we perceive others…in a way it’s beautiful that you accepted your friend, just as he was with no preconceptions…it’s just a little unusual sometimes when you meet the mum or dad and they have a strong accent or stronger features and it strikes you that they may come from another country. Indeed you came from another country to Australia when you were very young? so perhaps you were just very accepting of others anyway :D

This is so very cool !!! And loved your descriptions and replies to people……makes it very real even though its a cartoon ! I lived in Washington D.C. and lets just say you could easily pick me out of the year book :) so I can totally relate~

  • it’s so nice to hear from you catnipmeow!! that’s a mouthful to pronounce out loud!! lol….. It’s nice to hear from someone who can relate, sometimes you just feel so alone in your circumstances. A boy commited suicide here yesterday, because he was bullied and made to feel he didn’t fit in…it breaks my heart….
