when i was a teenager i had two very special friends, best friends, we were like sisters….Marvette an aboriginal/islander and Prawn or Naomi, a Norfolk Islander, our fave song was ‘Ebony and Ivory’.....i am the Ivory and they are the Ebony…..Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder sing this together here
Even though I was the victim of racial abuse throughout my childhood, (because i was a white child living in a predominently aboriginal community and my father was a policeman) I learned to love and be loved by those in a different aboriginal community…these gorgeous people accepted me, loved me, and made me feel as though we were one people….i can never forget their great love and acceptance of me…..it was a perfect balance for the abuse i’d received earlier in my life, and it helped me to see both sides of the equation…
Here are the lyrics to Ebony and Ivory...i live by this code, let’s teach them to our children and change the mistakes of the past by breeding tolerance:
Ebony and ivory live together in perfect harmony
Side by side on my piano keyboard, oh lord, why dont we?
We all know that people are the same where ever we go
There is good and bad in evryone,
We learn to live, we learn to give
Each other what we need to survive together alive.
Ebony and ivory live together in perfect harmony
Side by side on my piano keyboard, oh lord why dont we?
Ebony, ivory living in perfect harmony
Ebony, ivory, ooh
We all know that people are the same where ever we go
There is good and bad in evryone,
We learn to live, we learn to give
Each other what we need to survive together alive.
Ebony and ivory live together in perfect harmony
Side by side on my piano keyboard, oh lord why dont we?
Ebony, ivory living in perfect harmony

So tempting to write a deep and meaningful response but, like all your designs, so pleasant, well-done.
I wonder if Marvette and Prawn will like this cocktail of faces. :)

i hope so..but they prob aren’t on the internet much… prawn sort of still wanders from town to town, and marvette is working hard…she and her mum :Aunty Maureen work on film production together (in white shirt on right) and here is one of the screenplays they worked on together…Marvette wrote a story about an aboriginal girl who doesn’t look aboriginal here

Here is the utube version of Susan’s Birthday Party by Maureen Logan www.metroscreen.org. which is a screenplay/short movie written, directed and produced by old indigenous friends Maureen and Marvette Logan

The story about Susan with the red curly hair (as usual) is a little bit related to what I originally wanted to write: At my favourite school, I taught with a fellow whose way with the kids I admired so much. (He had what used to be called the OA class and GA, in high schools.) It was only when, just once I as invited to his parents place that it really registered with me that he was Asian.
He had an Asian name. Looked Asian but it had not really, well, registered with me until then. Sounds corny. Is true.
migaloomagic replied
yes, it’s funny how we perceive others…in a way it’s beautiful that you accepted your friend, just as he was with no preconceptions…it’s just a little unusual sometimes when you meet the mum or dad and they have a strong accent or stronger features and it strikes you that they may come from another country. Indeed you came from another country to Australia when you were very young? so perhaps you were just very accepting of others anyway :D
CATNIPMEOW
This is so very cool !!! And loved your descriptions and replies to people…...makes it very real even though its a cartoon ! I lived in Washington D.C. and lets just say you could easily pick me out of the year book :) so I can totally relate~
migaloomagic replied
it’s so nice to hear from you catnipmeow!! that’s a mouthful to pronounce out loud!! lol….. It’s nice to hear from someone who can relate, sometimes you just feel so alone in your circumstances. A boy commited suicide here yesterday, because he was bullied and made to feel he didn’t fit in…it breaks my heart….
migaloomagic replied
he was only 14 years old too :(

A lovely version! So cute and creative!

okay so now you tore my heart out and made me cry…........how heart breaking and soul shaking~ I wish sometimes that children were kinder….....I have a little boy who is 4 and I watch him at the playground and sometimes kids are just so mean to him but we have Karen refugees from Burma at our church and you should see the way these children are…....full of love,, acceptance and joy-
I shall raise my son to be kind and thats my way of change :)
migaloomagic replied
so sorry catnipmeow, yes, it’s terrible….parents need to teach their children the importance of tolerance for all peoples of all races, creeds, colours including the disabled and I believe that this is where the problem lies
sparklehen
Wow, if we just took a little time to think about the consequences of our actions there would be less wounds to heal
migaloomagic replied
thanx sparkles, it is so true…i think it begins with the parents instilling the value of tolerance in the children :D

.......oh fantastic design by the way!

such a simple style, yet so beautiful. Both of these creations really pull at the heartstrings, especially with all the stories behind them. I can’t imagine how that poor boy’s parents must feel. That’s so sad. I don’t know why people are so mean to each other and scared of people who are different from themselves. It’s been happening far too long and I wish it would stop. We are all one species… isn’t it time we acted like it?
on a happier note… these will look awesome on the walls of bedrooms, kindergartens, child care centres and schools!!! xx GG
migaloomagic replied
thank you so much georgiegirl for your wonderful response. I think it is fear generated from beyond, through parents and society that’s unwilling to look beyond petty differences and realise our hearts all beat the same

lovely lovely piece, Karin!! i think people need to learn to get along with each other better eh.. being a mixed breed, i’ve had people manking nasty comments of me in front of me before, thinking that i don’t understand their language.. sigh.. don’t people understand that it’s always better to make allies than enemies?
absolutely love this design, Karin! especially love the message and story that comes along with it. =D
migaloomagic
thank you fa, for your thoughtful and thought-provoking response…did you watch the video about the little red haired girl.? She is the daughter of an aboriginal/islander friend of mine…Marvette….Marvette has dark skin and curly black hair, whilst her daughter Sarah has white skin, freckles and red hair!!! I’m so sorry to hear that people have been so rude making nasty comments, it’s so hurtful and ridiculous in this age where tolerance for others is such a very important trait to be encouraged. A lot of people would have mixed race in their genealogy if they traced it back far enough, and this intolerance and disrespect for others is really antiquated.
