Dimly visible in the pre-dawn glow.
Bare feet sinking into wet holes.
Seemingly smooth expanse:
Pale, pale, like a kitten’s belly.
Small, hard grains roll underfoot –
Building, crashing, reaching, sucking.
Constantly shifting darkness.
Gather – rush – retreat… Gather – rush – retreat…
Feathery crests appear, merge, fade.
Gulls chorus the morning –
Blues… Pinks… Pastel purple…
Clouds colouring shyly, caught in the moment,
blushing brightly as the sky lightens.
A vision of splendour.
The sun bursts forth –
Composed while camping at Cape Leveque, Western Australia, after spending a few mornings on Cable Beach, Broome.
