What Is

The meaning of Home is simple to a child –
at least it was to me. I’d moved five times
before Grade Three; to my nine-year-old mind,
Home was where my bear Ted slept, and where wild
bedtime stories of Dad’s dog Socks beguiled
me into dreams. But I left all that behind
at fifteen. For years I drifted, trying to find
a place of my own to belong to. . . After a while,

I stopped looking. I lie in bed, alone,
while Ted, wrapped in my circled arms, lies fast
asleep. The pictures of my friends smile down –
I grin at Bre’s goofy gaze – and in my last
floating thoughts, it crosses my mind that Home
is wanting what is now, and not the past.

Well written and love your conclusion! I went to 15 schools (13 of them primary schools), so know exactly where you’re coming from with this one, Mieke.

  • Wow, that’s nuts! I hope you made some good friends when you finally settled… It’s such a formative time (primary school). Thanks for your comments :) :)

Hi Mieke, I totally agree, I went to 12 different primary schools too, but an old aussie saying is , “home is where you hang your hat”, so true, cheers,Lyn.

  • Yep – though I never wear a hat (naughty un-sunsmart me!) so if I stuck to that saying, I would never be ‘home’!! But yes – home is where we make it. We make it physically, but it’s also a spiritual/mental decision… Thank you for commenting, Lyn :)
