7 photo pano stitch (cropped – so probably really 6 photos… but still pretty gigantic!)

Nikon D800 + Nikkor 24-70mm
ISO 100 • f/11 • 1/30sec • 29mm The Cockburn (“koh-bern”) Ranges, East Kimberley.

When I first came to the Kimberley, it was as a teacher, and the Kimberley Catholic schools had a program called “Kimberley Calling” which I liked the sound of… it was nice to think that a place “called” people to it.
After I’d been swimming with friends one day, I heard another story… that once you’ve drunk water from the Fitzroy River (which we all had – we were swimming!), you have the Kimberley in you, and even if you leave, you’ll always come back. And interestingly, one of the most common stories you’ll hear up here is that “I was only going to stay for a week/month/year…. and I’m still here.”

The Kimberley is tough, it’s hot, it’s rugged, it’s isolated, and it doesn’t suffer fools gladly… but it is one of the most special places on Earth.

Wonderful Mieke and love the decription, makes me want to go for a swim and drink some of that water. :o) tony

  • :) :) :) Thank you, Tony!! You have to dodge the crocodiles in the Fitzroy, but if you’re far enough inland (which we were), they’re all “freshies” (freshwater crocodiles) so they’re not as aggro :)

Hi Mieke, I love the “balance” of this pano with the two trees. I do wish RB could show panoramas bigger, the small image cannot do them proper justice.

  • Thank you, Charles! I have already had someone comment (on another website) that this photo is “too symmetrical” so I’m glad you like the symmetry :)

Superb image Mieke, well composed. I camped near here on the Penticost River. Gotta love the Kimberley.

  • Thanks, Terry! Yes, this is just further on a bit (towards Kununurra/Wyndham) after the Pentecost Crossing. I’ve never camped there, but I can imagine it was wonderful :) We were staying at Home Valley Station – they’ve done it up really well, I think! :)

beautifully composed and an amazing panorama (I wonder what percentage of your walls are filled with your photos… or is it just a case of opening a window??)

  • Thanks, Bernd!! :) Nah, all these amazing scenes are a little way away from my house :) And I actually have my artwork rather than my photography on the walls!! I used to paint/draw…
