The beautiful Flinders Street Station, Melbourne, Victoria (Australia)
The Wikipedia entry on Flinders Street Station is well worth a read – really interesting!!!

Thanks to Kris for pointing me in the direction of the Metro photography permit… I’ll happily carry one of them around with me next time – it’s an agreement that you’ll be a reasonable person and you don’t have to get anyone else to sign it!!

Clicking Larger doesn’t work! Happens sometimes. Is this an RB fault? But looks good this size. :)

  • Did you click the photo or my words? My words don’t link. I’d say it’s a computer/internet issue, Charles – works fine for me when I click on the photo! I’m glad you like it :) :) :)

Lovely tones and shapes here Mieke… did you get hassled by security for taking photos inside the station?

  • Ummm… yes. I was asked if I was a tourist (this trip, yes!) and whether I was taking the photos for ‘commercial purposes’ (and my understanding is that selling work on RB doesn’t actually fall into that category) so I said “no” and she let me take a few more photos. If I find out I’m in the wrong, I’ll take the photos down, but as far as I’m aware, I’m clear. Sigh. I’m not quite sure why it’s an issue!? Isn’t it a public place?? Thanks for the compliment, by the way, Kris =D

I’m fairly sure ‘commercial purposes’ would mean something like a commissioned photo shoot for a magazine or newspaper, for example. I asked about the security guys because I know a couple of people at my camera club who’ve been asked to stop taking photos at Flinders St station. Apparently, though, as I just found out by googling it, you can take photos at any metro train station in Melbourne. All you need to do is fill in one of these and carry it with you. It doesn’t cover Southern Cross station though, and there doesn’t seem to be anywhere you can get a permit for there… so I guess I’ll have to shoot quickly before they chuck me out when I go there, lol :))

  • Wow! That’s so good to know, Kris!! I had no idea!
If only they asked you to grab a permit instead of treating you like an enemy… I’ll happily carry that around with me next time! And I’m going to tell everyone else about it too!! You sign it yourself! Awesome!!!

I love railway stations. I’ll be at Sydney Central this time tomorrow morning. It’s another reminder of the days when steam rail travel was all the rage and very sophisticated. Even the smaller country stations had their “refreshment rooms”. By the way, if you don’t wanna be hassled about taking photos for commercial purposes, buy an old used Fujifilm Finepix hehe.

  • He he.
I know. They see a DSLR and think “pro photographer”. Yeah, right. Well, I’m happy with my D60 – I don’t want an old used Fujifilm Finepix (even if they do take wonderful photos!!)
Anyhoo, hope you handled the rush at Sydney Central this morning, Gary :) :) :)
