Following the epic adventure of the Wednesday Warriors, I should have had a rest.

Instead, two mornings later, I joined the “Hardcore Hikers” (my nickname – not theirs!) to get up at a ridiculously early hour and jump in the car at 3am for a dawn shoot up the mountain.

Surprisingly, I found it much easier-going in the dark. Perhaps because your whole world is reduced to a pool of light one step in front of your feet and you’re concentrating so hard on where to put your feet that your mind doesn’t register how far you’re going??

I think we were all a bit disappointed with the conditions… this was probably my best shot of the morning, as the sky remained a stubborn grey and we didn’t get any of the spectacular sunrise shots we’d hoped for. The squiggly lights are everyone’s head torches as they looked for a patch of Fagus to shoot at sunrise. And the reason my bit of Fagus is so bright is because I used my torch to “light paint” it!

A big THANK YOU to Rob Mullner our fearless leader, and to Podzy, Garth, Nick Skinner, Murph, and Mel Sinclair for your wonderful company!! And a big “hig five” to Mel – you know what for!!

Fabulous image Mieke. The yellow tones look beautiful against the dark colours, great contrast!!!

  • Thanks, Fern! It was a great morning, but sitting here in the dark waiting for sunrise got me very, very cold!!

Light painting certainly worked well, must remember to try it sometime. Looks like quite a few seconds exposure. and I like the disembodied light trails :)

  • Oops! Forgot to add the EXIF data! It was just over 4 mins :)
Thanks, Charles! And yes – give it a go. It’s fun!
