Greetings from BEAUTIFUL Cradle Mountain!!!

I’m currently in Tasmania for the commencement of the RedBubble meet-up at Cradle Mountain, so this is a very brief message to say hi and apologise in advance that I won’t be online much for the next week.

Last week, my mum and I had a delightful time traipsing around the North-West Coast with Murph (ie. David Murphy) who is an absolute Master of seascape photography… His work is fantastic and his gallery is amazing. We were joined on the last evening by Garth Smith – and again, his shots made me realise that there really is an art to coastal photography… I picked up a lot of tips and tricks from these two fellas, and now I’m itching to buy an ND Grad filter set for my Zeiss 21mm. The cokin set is just too narrow!

I arrived at Cradle Mountain on Thursday, and have shot every sunset and sunrise since with the indefatigable Mark Walsh (better known as Tinnieopener). If the back of his camera is anything to go by, he has some absolute corkers from the past few days… Especially this morning!!

He and Claire (ClaireBear) took me on a MASSIVE walk yesterday (I have discovered that I have muscles I never knew existed… they all hurt today!!!!) to have a sneak preview of the beautiful autumnal colours of the native deciduous beech tree (a.k.a. “The Fagus”). I didn’t see any of Claire’s photos, but judging by the way she was shooting, I expect we’ll be treated to some fabulous macro shots of the amazing Fagus leaves! I wore seven layers of clothes plus a beanie and scarf and gloves. Lucky I did, because at the top, it started snowing!!

There are so many bubblers coming here over the next week… apparently there are going to be about 50 of us at dinner next Friday night! I can’t wait to meet everyone!! Safe travels!! Don’t forget to pack your gloves and thermals!!

…and bloody freezing!!!

I’m so happy for you and really envious at the same time Mieke. I can feel the delight in your writing and also can’t wait to see your images. It will take a while for you to process all the favourites from your trip. See you soon :) :) :)

  • Hi Ian! I’d love to start processing now, but with these massive files, the laptop that I have doesn’t have the RAM for it :(
At least I’m getting into “training” for when you and Di arrive… sunrises and sunsets and not much sleep in between!!

Thanks a LOT Mieke! We are so disappointed that we couldn’t make it again this year.
Don’t let those two con you into a game of pool!
Say a big Hello to Clairebear and Tinni for us. I know you will get some amazing images there!

  • Sorry Neil ;)
Bet it won’t help if I tell you that the lake was glass when I got there this morning??
I will definitely say hi to Claire and Tinnie for you both!

sounds fantastic – really can’t wait to see the results. (Wait… SEVEN LAYERS of clothing? Can you even move arms when wearing that many?)

  • With difficulty ;)
You only need to move your fingers anyway… and in between, I had two pairs of gloves on!
Thanks, Bernd… I hope you won’t be disappointed when I start posting them!

Really looking forward to seeing your shots of Tassie Mieke, I guess you’re feeling the cold (long way from Broome’s weather and all that) :)

  • Thanks, JC! I’m really looking forward to seeing your shots too. And I’m looking forward to seeing your very own self even more!!!

Sounds great … and freezing is good. Heat/Snow … I know which I can deal with more easily.

  • Thanks, Bruce! I dunno about freezing being good… I’m much more used to dealing with the heat!!

Looking forward to your photos Mieke, I see the forecast down there is cool and showery for the week but that may give some great early morning or sunset shots. :) Charles

  • Hi Charles! Thank you :) Yes, it has been raining and foggy… but I do like a good foggy photo so I’m making the most of the conditions!! :)
