Going away...
Mr.Roland died two days after I took that picture,he was a realy good friend and I use to tease him a lot.He was blind but always recognised me because he knew my voice«Ah!....« Gigi de St-Hippolyte»he used to say , holding my hand.He never asked for much only to organised his meal in a way he could easily eat by himself and to give him his chaplet for the ceremony on sundays.A great person , very generous and smiling all the time. The worst part for him was not being able to go to the bathroom ,I think that idea killed him ,he was so proud. He died very peacefully with her daughter and son ,hand in hand .The hand you see in the picture is his son’s .Let’s say that if I wasn’t passionnate about my job I couldn’t do it .

This really is “in the moment”. The passion in your portraits of patients are timeless and I’m sure they bring a lot of comfort to the relatives. Having worked in a Victorian psychiatric hospital for over 13 years I think back at all the images I captured in my mind and how poweful these would have been as photographs. The relatives must have a great deal of faith in you to allow you to take such personal pictures. I sometimes wonder how many nurses or carers see the patients as people. You obviously do. Great stuff,

Such a sad, powerful image. It reminds me of when my father died of cancer, he was so distressed in the last few weeks of his life, and when his time was very close I touched his poor, hot, dry forehead and how I wanted to save him…......... he died soon after. I truly don’t know how you held the camera long enough to take the photo, but thank you from all of us who don’t ever want to forget…............
micmac replied
Roland was so peaceful ,he knew the time had come ,I also knew his wife who said to him that she would never died in an hospital ,she died before him,she was waiting for him. It’s the most wonderful love story ever, thanks Itruskett.I’m glad you were with your father for his last moment ,thank heaven for such a special moment.Being old is a thing but cancer is so hard to accept because they go so young .

The last moments of life are so beautiful and so rarely are we given the opportunity to make a lasting image of them, this is gorgeous! MicMac,
Again, your beautifully compassionate heart shines through in this photograph.
The story of Mr. Roland and his family is so very moving and touching.
His son’s hand, touching his face, i see so much love in that gesture.
A quiet celebration of love and family.
Teaching us that crossing over can be a peaceful experience.

very beautifull and touching moment of a life fading away! reminded me of the time I was working in the Terminally Ill Patient’s Unit!
If one has ever has a sense of failure in life, just remember that taking care of the ill and dying is one of the most priviledge place where one can be and learn how to love, and show compassion. Not every body can do it ,it is a very great school and few qualify and get their “Masters” there.Be Blessed!

They are a lot like me but we normaly get fade up by the system and get out.We see so much injustice in hospitals. My boss doesn’t have a heart and says that she’s not at the hospital to be love.Hopely I’m finding so much joy being with the elderly, that’s why I’m still there after 17 years…Thanks you very much Jacqi,it feels good to be encouraged sometimes….xx

Very touching, Gigi… Reminds me of my grandfather who died one and half year ago (he also was a proud man and it killed him when he finally even couldn’t eat himself and needed lot of help; he never wanted to be dependent on someones help) and unfortunately, I was not able to be with him and hold his hand because I live far away and couldn’t get there with my little children… still too emotional, sitting here in tears now… Great you made the photograph, and thanks for sharing my dear friend!
micmac replied
Oh! Lenka,so sad,I understand so much, both my parents died alone and it’s not because I wasn’t close,I was there almost every day,I strongly believe that your father choose to die alone because he was a very proud man,I feel that he didn’t want you to see him suffering.Don’t feel sad I’ve seen so many visitors at the hospital hang on to souvenirs and crying on themselves, you love him and he knows, celebrate the present moment,he’s listenning to you,I know…big hug my friend…love Gigi

Wow. i connect to this totally. for one reason being my grandma. she had a stroke about 3 years ago and has been stuck in bed ever since. she also cant see or hear much, and relies upon family to look after her. The thing is she looks like mr Roland here did. so it kinda bought a tear to my eye (but not in a bad way) i just connected to it very strongly. so im not going to say anything about lighting or comp etc. cause the emotion saids it all to me. Thank you. :-)))

Cora Wandel
Congratulations on your feature in Nirvana, I belong to the group but don’t have a chance often to look at other artists’ work. Your writing and image are very powerful. I also looked in your portfolio and saw another photo that I am going to comment on. Since I see from these two works that you not only like to put words to your photos but that you are also a very good writer, you may want to consider the group I am co-host of, it is ImageWriting, it is for those of us who love to do what you seem to enjoy as well, put words to our work. But as for this particular work, it is very powerful indeed. Excellent. – Cora
micmac replied
I feel a little insecure about writing in english and was very surprised to read your beautiful comment.I did load some writing but just a few commented it but it’s true that the pics taken at my work are very inspiring for me and I always add a few words to explain.I would be honnored to enter your group Cora…thank you …Gigi
Cora Wandel
Gigi, we do not care about the level of your writing skill or command of the English language, we have people from all over the world and all walks of life as part of this group. Just write to the best of your ability, but do not worry about it being perfect English or brilliant writing. The simplest writing can have the most powerful message, and this work of yours is a perfect example for it is very dramatic and emotional and beautiful. Welcome again to our group.
Your hosts,

Thanks for sharing this. I have been a hospice volunteer and my wife is a nurse and I think writing about experiences is a wonderful thing and we can all learn from these things.

This is such a moving photo. It reminds me so much of our beloved grampa who passed away two weeks ago. He, too, was a very proud man and having to completely depend on us for the last six months of his life was such a blow to him. Nevertheless, he remained loving, cheerful and positive till he took his last breath. He passed away peacefully here at home, in his own bedroom, according to his wish. I found him gone shortly after the last time I checked on him. Now we take comfort in knowing that he is with his beloved wife and son now, and that we somehow made him happy and comfortable through the end of his earthly journey. Thank you for sharing such a poignant image.
micmac replied
So lucky he was to have you and to be at home.I always try to give the best of myself in those situations but it’s nothing compare to being with your family in your own bed…what an amazing story of a beautiful soul…you so much deserve to have a name like “Celeste”...I hope that I will be honnored on my last wisper to be with my beautiful grand-daughter Angelica(notice the name)..she is I believe my angel.Your grampa is with you right this minute to look after his dear Celeste…I’m sure…hugzzz and bise …Gigi oh!!! thank you …. :))

This is an incredibly moving photo, I didn’t have the chance to say goodbye to my Dad when he passed. I fortunately remember, vividly, the last time I saw him…
This is a great work…
Thank you

gigi you have captured a moment that in words you could never have explained to any of us or anyone else unless they were there. Sometimes we get this nudge deep within us when we are taking photos as in this situation and that nudge has caused many photographers to back away from intimate shots like this. I’m glad you didn’t heed to the nudge, there was just no other way to explain your care and love for this family and this man. I believe you captured a powerful love! well done and my condolences to you and the immediate family.
