AFTER SPENDING THE BEST PART OF A WINTER’S DAY IN THE CUYAHOGA VALLEY, I DECIDED TO HEAD FOR HOME. IN FRONT OF THE BRANDYWINE SKI AREA THIS GUY WAS JUST SITTING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. CARS WERE PULLING UP TO HIM AND HONKING THIER HORNS AND HE WOULD JUST ACT LIKE THEY WEREN’T EVEN THERE.
I REALLY LIKE THESE BIRDS AND I WAS AFRAID HE’D GET HIT SO I PULLED OVER AND GOT OUT OF MY VAN TO SEE IF I COULD SCARE HIM INTO MOVING, BUT HE IGNORED ME TOO. ( THAT WAS AFTER GETTING THE PICTURE, OF COURSE ! ).
AS I GOT OUT OF THE VAN I HEARD SEVERAL CROWS CALLING NEAR BY. THEY MUST HAVE ATTACKED THE HAWK AND BEATEN HIM UP PRETTY BADLY. HE HAD THAT SAME DAZED LOOK YOU’LL SOMETIMES SEE ON A BOXER’S FACE AFTER A BAD ROUND.
I NUDGED HIM A COUPLE TIMES WITH MY LEG AND HE STILL DIDN’T MOVE, SO I STARTED TO BEND OVER TO PICK HIM UP AND TAKE HIM TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD; HE WASN’T INTERESTED IN THAT, SO HE TOOK OFF. I’M GLAD IT WORKED OUT THAT WAY. THIER BEAKS AND TALONS CAN EXERT BONE-BREAKING PRESSURE AND, AFTER ALL THESE YEARS, I’VE GOTTEN USED TO MY FINGERS BEING RIGHT WHERE THEY ARE, AT THE ENDS OF MY HANDS, AS OPPOSED TO SCATTERED ALL OVER THE VALLEY.

Well, your fingers might have been mighty nutritious.
This is a fantastic photo, Mike! He’s a beautiful creature!
I love them from a distance, because I deal with the little birds these guys’ little cousins prefer to chow down on. Oh, and they owe me a few cats, too!

Great shot and story, nice of you to care so much! Hawk’s are pretty neat. There was a day we had snow here and one was hunting mice in our field…it just flew against the heavy wind that was blowing and stayed in one little spot till he got him some lunch.

I’m grateful there are people like you left in this world who don’t just drive by but stop and help an animal or a bird.

Thanks again, Mariann. They’re such great birds and it’s such a great area that it just would have been wrong NOT to stop.
I appreciate the comment.
